AT FEATHERS
END AVIARY
We are a small
home based aviary located just south of Lansing, Michigan. We became
involved in parrots about nine years ago when I became aware that
it was no longer legal to import birds from the wild. I have always
felt that importation for our pleasure was a travesty of justice.
To be honest as much as I love my birds if the habitat was there
and by some magic all wrongs could be undone I would rather see
them as God intended flying free.
Over the years
we have been asked to take in many unwanted, abused, neglected,
and at times mutilated parrots. Some have been rehabilitated and
gone on to other homes some have stayed here. If you were to go
through our aviary you would find many rather sad looking plucked
birds. They are invariably imported, wild birds that captivity has
not treated kindly. All have been paired and some have bred some
have not and that is okay. I now have several pairs that the hens
are beyond breeding capability and they are now retired just living
out their lives together.
We believe that
parrots can be happy in a human environment if raised correctly
with love and kindness and placed in proper homes with people that
care. We do not seek to mass produce birds and that is why if some
breed and some do not that is okay. Our babies are raised in a bedroom
turned into a nursery and when they are ready for a cage they come
downstairs and finish weaning and learning to fly in our living
room and dining room.
