Arcaries are members of the family Ramphastidae, all of whose species are found throughout the neotropical regions of Latin America. Being forest dwellers, aracaris range from the coastal rainforests of Brazil to the high altitude cloud forests of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru sometimes exceeding elevations of 9,000 feet. Aracaris are found in every country from Mexico to Argentina. However they are not often seen in Chile.

Aracaries are intelligent, curious, and fun to own. They are playful, and spend a great deal of time exploring their environment. Aracaris cannot mimic human speech, but effectively communicate with their human owners in other interesting ways. They might sit on your shoulder or a perch, and can be taught to tricks, like fetching or catching.

Aracaris are small versions of large toucans. They are fairly consistent in their personalities, no matter the type. The small aracaris are much less expensive than some of the popular large toucans.

Aracaris make wonderful pets. The birds are friendly, cuddly, playful, intelligent and curious. Like many birds, they enjoy playing with toys, and with their owners. Aracaris might it on your shoulder, snuggle in your lap, and when contented the have been known to purr like a kitten.

Aracaris do not screech or make other annoying, loud noises. They do not and cannot bite hard. They also cannot chew furniture and such things. They do not have dander, so they are a good choice for those with allergies, making it easier to keep their areas clean.
