Lineolated or Barred
Parakeet
Ordinates: in Central
America from southern Mexico south to western Panama, and northwestern
South America from westernmost Venezuela south to central Peru.
These are among the smallest
of parrots weighing about 42 to 50 grams. In the wild they are mostly
green in color with their feathers being edged in black which gives
them a barred appearance. They have been bred in captivity for some
time and several lovely mutations are available including blue or
turquoise, cobalt blue, creamino, lutino, slate, dark green and
olive.
If you have limited space,
or live in an apartment and noise is a factor than this could be
the parrot for you. They are quiet, friendly birds with a steady
temperament when handled gently. They can learn to talk. In fact
a couple of my breeders talk to me every day when I go in to feed
them. They are playful and active and seem to enjoy hanging upside
from the top of their cage. They love their toys and amuse themselves
with soft twitterings seldom making loud noises and never as loudly
as lovebirds or parrotlets.
