These little gems, the Lineolated Parakeets, are found from South Mexico to Veraguas, Western Panama. Birds from Northern Colombia and Venezuela should be regarded as belonging to the nominate species, Bolborhynchus Lineola. The subspecies Bolborhynchus Tigrinus, or Barred Parakeet, is very similar, except it is darker green and has a broader black edging, and on the bend of the wing, the black is often very extensive. These Lineolated Parakeet's territory likely extends through the entire Andes region, from northwest Venezuela (Tachira, Merida, Distrito, Federal), Columbia (North deSantander south to Cauca), and northwest Dquado to central Peru (Cuzco, Ayachucho).
Lineolated Parakeets inhabit open forest, cleared areas, savannah with trees, and cloud forests of the sub tropical zone of Central American, between 3,000 ft and 8,000 ft. The Lineolated Parakeet has been seen to occasionally visit cultivated areas.
Lineolated Parakeets tend to wander in small groups, but on occasion gather in greater numbers, for seasonal migrations between altitudes and between areas. They have been seen to follow the bamboo seedlings. Lineolated fly straight, with strong wing beats. Flying great distances, linnies have been observed flying between the clouds. When flying, the Lineolateds sound like song birds with high pitched twittering.
As, the Lineolated Parakeet is arboreal, their natural diet seems to be composed of buds, berries, fruit seeds and probably insects and their larvae. Occasionally linnies are sighted in maize fields.
The Lineolated Parakeets are among the smallest of parrots, weighing about 45 to 60 grams. In the wild, they are mostly green in color, their feathers edged in black, giving them a somewhat barred appearance.

Lineolateds have been bred in captivity for some time, and and several mutations are available, including turquoise, cobalt, mauve creaming, lutino dark green and olive. In the past several years other lovely diluted versions of the fore mentioned colors have also become available, in which the black barring is greatly lightened, or almost missing. These are called Sex Linked Greywings. In Europe, violet and pied mutations have also developed.
If you have limited space, live in an apartment, or if noise is a factor, or if you just want a small gentle companion, than this could be the parrot for you. Linnies are quiet, friendly birds, with a steady temperament when handled gently. Linnies can learn to talk, whistle and mimic other sounds. In fact, a few of my breeders talk to me every day when I go in to feed them.
