Mited Conure Male, 12 Years Old

Mitred Conure

Originates from central and southern Peru south thru eastern Bolivia to La Rioja and western Cordoba in north-western Aregentina.

The subspecies that we see in American aviculture is the Aratinga Mitrata mitrata.

This is one of the larger of the conures weiging about 230 grams. They are primarily a green bird with forecrown, lores, cheeks and sides of neck red. They also have varying degrees of red feathers scattered throughout their bodies. Some birds only have a few some have many.

This is a very outgoing, though reactive bird. They do not miss much. They are constantly alert to everything around them and make great watch birds. If anything unusual happens they give their loud piercing alarm call. They can become very devoted to their owner and efforts should be made to keep them friendly to everyone in the family to prevent aggression to other family members. They are playful and will cheerfully own you if you let them. Here again as with all Aratingas their call is loud and if noise bothers you and you want a sedate quite bird they are not for you. If you want one that has an opinion about everything and you don’t mind they showing it they are wonderful.

They can be good talkers.
