Originates in
Central Chile, Much of Argentina and Southern Uruguay.
This is the
largest of the Conures weighing 250 to 280 grams and approximately
18 inches in length. The Lesser Patagonian is the subspecies most
commonly found in American aviculture. I personally have never seen
a true specimen of a Greater Patagonian though many people have
claimed to have them.
I like to describe
their coloration as a beautiful fall day with colors of subdued
yellow, orange, olive and blue.
These birds
have a very loud and piercing contact call however I have found
that they do not tend to scream for long periods on end and make
the most delightful pets. They are ground feeders and love to graze
the floor for tidbits. Mine love to follow me about the house like
little dogs at heel. Of course because of this habit you must make
sure that there is nothing toxic low to the ground that they can
get their curious beaks into. Even after four years in the breeder
aviary my ex-pet male will still lie quietly in my hand upside down
and be petted. They are graceful fliers and I have never had a full
flighted bird fly into an obstacle in the house. They will rise
from the floor hover and then make for their destination. They make
a wonderful and devoted pet if noise is not a factor.
Some learn to
talk quite well.
